Permit Prep Class and Knowledge (Permit) Testing

One of the first steps in learning to drive is obtaining your beginner's permit, but sometimes people struggle passing the knowledge test at the DMV. That's where we come in! Since 2012, we have been certified as a Third Party Tester and have been able to offer the knowledge test / permit test.

Maybe you've failed the permit test at the DMV before, or maybe you'd just like to feel more prepared before taking it to give yourself the greatest chance of success. Either way, we're here to help!

864 Drivers Ed offers a permit prep class to prepare you properly for the questions that you'll be asked on the permit test, and once you're confident in your ability to pass, we'll administer the permit test as well!

Our permit prep class is perfect for anyone who:

  • has attempted the permit test at the DMV and was not successful
  • feels discouraged about ever passing the permit test
  • struggles with understanding the driver's manual and the material
  • needs extra time and attention when learning
  • needs extra support when testing
  • finds testing at the DMV challenging due to the distractions
  • feels anxious or stressed about testing at the DMV
  • feels overwhelmed about taking the permit test
  • would prefer a paper test

We provide a supportive environment for you to both learn and test.

The permit class typically lasts around two hours, though may take longer depending on the needs of those in attendance. We do not rush students, so you are free to take your time, both during the class and during the test. We will cover everything that you'll be tested on and more.

Upon successful completion of the permit test, we will provide you with a sealed envelope (the green envelope you may have heard about) with your test results inside to take to any SC DMV office, where they will take your picture, complete your vision test, and print your brand new beginner's permit!

Congratulations! Once you receive your beginner's permit, you can begin driving and practicing!

If you're 15, 16, or 17 years old, you must hold your beginner's permit for at least 180 days before you'll be eligible to take your road test. If you're 18 or older, you'll only need to hold yours for 30 days before you can take your road test - and we offer training for both teens and adults as well as the road test.

The fee for our permit class and test is $50, but we provide it free for students who have completed our eight hour teen driver class, either in person (at any of our locations!) or virtually via Zoom.

Classes are held at our Lyman office at 205 Spartanburg Hwy. Lyman, SC 29365

Please give us a call at (864) 346-6617 to register for an upcoming permit class! Space is extremely limited to ensure we're able to provide all attendees with the focus and attention that they need to ensure success.

Please plan for the class to take around two hours, though it may be longer depending on the needs of the students in attendance.

UPCOMING PERMIT CLASS DATES

  • Sunday, November 30 at 1:00pm
  • Saturday, December 13 at 6:00pm

This service is available only to United States citizens who are at least 15 years old and to those who have never before held a beginners permit. If you have ever held a beginners permit, you are limited to testing at the DMV and are not eligible to take a permit test with a Third Party Tester.

Students under the age of 18 will need a parent present before or after the permit class to sign some paperwork, so please come in with your student instead of just dropping them off.

Please bring your birth certificate or school ID (if in high school) or South Carolina state identification card or US passport as proof of identity. Without this, we can not release your results.

Please note that we can not guarantee that you will pass the test and secure a SC Beginners Permit, and the SC DMV reserves the right to randomly recall any applicant for re-testing
