All students must have a valid beginners permit or drivers license before getting behind the wheel with 864 Drivers Ed. An international drivers license, expired beginners permit, or expired drivers license do not meet this requirement.

If your beginners permit is expired, you must renew it at a SC DMV office before you can begin training with us.

  • As long as it has been expired for less than 9 months, renewing is easy! You don't have to do anything special - just go renew it!
  • If your beginners permit has been expired for 9 months or more, you will have to take another knowledge test at the SC DMV in order to renew. Note: This knowledge test can only be done at a SC DMV office - Third Party Testers and driving schools can only administer the knowledge test to applicants who have never had a beginners permit before.

When you renew your beginners permit, the DMV will provide you with a paper Temporary Driving Certificate to use until your official beginners permit arrives in the mail. You may use this Temporary Driving Certificate to train and test with us - you do not have to wait for the beginners permit to arrive in the mail.

As a Third Party Tester, we are not the SC DMV, and so we have slightly different rules. The SC DMV will sometimes administer the road test for people with expired beginners permits, but they do not allow Third Party Testers or driving schools to do so, so if you are taking a road test with 864 Drivers Ed, you will need to have a valid South Carolina beginners permit.

Although we can train you with a valid out of state beginners permit, we can only administer the road test to an applicant with a valid South Carolina beginners permit.

We do recognize that sometimes life gets in the way and it's hard to make a trip to the DMV, so to avoid the stress of dealing with an expired beginners permit, you can always renew your beginners permit online at scdmvonline.com before it expires. It takes only a few minutes and they will mail your new credential to you so you can avoid making the trip!

If your drivers license was suspended or you lost driving privileges for any reason and were told that you need to take the knowledge test and/or skills test again, you are limited to testing at a SC DMV office. Driving schools can only test applicants who have never held a drivers license before.
