Adult Driving Lessons in Greenville & Upstate SC

While South Carolina requires 15 and 16 year olds to complete a teen driver education program in order to get a conditional / restricted drivers license (along with meeting other conditions), there is no training requirement for anyone aged 17 or older.

 

At 17 years old, as long as you've had your beginners permit for at least 180 days, you are able to take your road test with either the SC DMV or a certified Third Party Tester / driving school, and obtain your drivers license without any formal training. The same is true for anyone 18 or older, except that you only need to have your beginners permit for 30 days before being eligible to take the road test.

 

That said, you are much more likely to be successful passing your road test the first time if you're properly prepared for it and know exactly what's expected of you. Often, people you know will try to give advice on the road test and how to pass it, but this information isn't always up to date or accurate, and they unintentionally steer you wrong.

During any lesson with us, we will spend time talking with you about your experience and skill level so that we can tailor the lesson to best help you. We'll put you in a variety of situations to both assess your current abilities, correct any mistakes you may be making, and give direction on how to improve so that you become a safer driver. We want you to be successful, both at the time of your road test and for the rest of your driving life, so we will train you to the best of our ability to ensure that success. Even a single 1.5 hour lesson can make a huge difference in your confidence and your skill level.

 

Once you've mastered the required skills, we can also administer the road test, and you don't need to make a separate appointment - we can do it immediately following your driving lesson while you're still feeling confident, accomplished, and relaxed. You have the greatest chance of success when you test right after your lesson.

You are not required to take your road test with us, and if you'd rather test at the SC DMV instead, we will still do our best to prepare you for the route that you'll be testing on. There are differences from test route to test route, so please just let us know where you'd like to take your road test and we'll make sure you're comfortable driving on the types of roads that you'll be tested on (example: some test routes include four lane roads with traffic and others only include two lane roads with very little traffic).

 

If your driving instructor does not feel confident in your ability to pass the road test, they will communicate that with you very clearly. We don't want you to fail and start to feel discouraged, so we will never push you to take a road test if we don't feel that you are ready.

If you're not ready for your road test after your lesson, that's okay! We can schedule additional training or just give you time to practice the things we've taught you (using the step by step instruction packet we give you) until you feel more confident.

At the time of the SC road test, applicants must:

• have a valid (not expired) South Carolina beginners permit
• have held their beginners permit for at least 180 days (30 days if 18 or older)
• have a parent present (if under 18)
• have their $60 payment in cash ($75 if not a student of 864 Drivers Ed)

 

Upon successful completion of the SC road test, we will submit the results to the SC DMV electronically before you leave our office. Results are input by us directly into the SC DMV system, so they will have your results immediately available. We will also email a copy of your test results to you, along with instructions on going to pick up your drivers license at a SC DMV branch office.

 

Congratulations! The last step is to go to any SC DMV office (the only limitation is for international customers), complete a vision test, take a new picture, and they will issue a Temporary Driving Certificate for you to use until your brand new official South Carolina drivers license arrives in the mail.
